Starbucks: Give us a fair work week!
Submitted on Tue, 08/26/2014 - 9:46am
The IWW Starbucks Workers Union (SWU) has been working with the media since August 10th to bring attention to scheduling practices in the Food and Retail Industry, and Starbucks in particular.
The initial coverage, done by the New York Times, received national attention. SWU provided the supporting research for the article. Starbucks responded immediately to the story, claiming the worker interviewed was an anomaly and schedules are posted at least a week in advance. SWU members were able to discredit this by knowing that the GLS scheduling software doesn't even allow Store Managers to start a schedule more than a week in advance. In addition we were able to poll workers nationally who reinforced the fact that we do not get more than 7 days notice.
The Nation, covered the August 2014 SWU report on understaffing and quoted SWU members.
SWU is working with the Center for Popular Democracy to show that one week or 10 days notice is not sufficient for baristas to be able to plan our lives. We are asking for one month notice of schedules, access to full time employment and for union representation.
