Statements of Solidarity for the Strikes in Mexico

On January 25th, workers in the maquiladora plants in Matamoros, Mexico began a strike to demand a wage increase of 20% and an annual bonus of 32,000 pesos. Since then, the movement has spread to various industries: self-service shops, mining, Coca Cola factories, metal factories, and others. The workers’ demands are just. We support the movement’s demands and express our sympathy and support with the movement in its struggle to improve living conditions.
Recently, there have been strong confrontations between strikers and scabs at the Coca Cola and Mecalux factories, which unfortunately resulted in 9 injuries. We stand against any type of harassment of repressive end of the conflict, and send our widest support for the situation to be resolved without violence and in favor of the striking workers.
In addition, the IWW expresses complete solidarity with the strike of our fellow workers at the Independent Union of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (SITUAM). The 20% wage increase for all of the workers, academic as well as administrative, does not put the UAM’s financial viability at risk, nor does it affect the university’s “substantive activities”, as the authorities are saying. On the other hand, the various bonuses and other discretionary funds that these authorities assign to themselves do put the university at risk.
Two months have passed since the struggle for better conditions and labor rights at SITUAM began. The IWW reaffirms our support to improve these working conditions and to stick by the collective contract, as well as the wage increase. We also repudiate the short-sightedness of those who maintain control of the university and refuse to renounce their privileges.

Comunicado en solidaridad con el movimiento 20/32 de Matamoros
El día 25 de enero del año en curso, trabajadores y trabajadoras de plantas maquiladoras en Matamoros emplazaron una huelga para exigir un aumento salarial del 20% y un bono anual de $32,000. Desde entonces, el movimiento se ha extendido a varias industrias: tiendas de autoservicio, minería, fábricas de Coca Cola, metalúrgicas, entre otros. Las reclamos de las y los trabajadores son justas. Nos solidarizamos con las demandas del movimiento y manifestamos nuestra simpatía y apoyo a el movimiento por la exigencia a mejorar su calidad de vida.
Recientemente, en las plantas de Coca-Cola y Mecalux han habido fuertes confrontaciones entre huelguistas y golpeadores, donde ha resultado un saldo de 9 heridos, desafortunadamente. Nos pronunciamos contra cualquier tipo de hostigamiento o salida represiva al conflicto, y enviamos nuestro más amplio apoyo para que la situación sea resuelta sin violencia a favor de los obreros y obreras en huelga.

Comunicado en solidaridad con la huelga del SITUAM
Las personas que conformamos el SITT-IWW manifestamos todo nuestro apoyo solidario a la huelga de nuestros compañeros trabajadores del Sindicato Independiente de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (SITUAM). El aumento salarial del 20% para todos los trabajadores, académicos y administrativos, no pone en riesgo la viabilidad financiera de la UAM ni afecta “actividades sustantivas” de la universidad, como declaran las autoridades. En cambio, sí lo hacen sus sobresueldos, bonos y demás gastos discrecionales que se auto-asignan.
Han pasado dos meses desde que inició la huelga por la justa lucha por sus derechos laborales en el SITUAM, y por estas razones, en el SITT-IWW reiteramos nuestro apoyo para mejorar las condiciones laborales y el respeto a su contrato colectivo, así como la resolución de sus demandas salariales. Igualmente, repudiamos la ceguera de quienes mantienen el control de su universidad y se niegan a renunciar a sus privilegios.
