Media Recap: M21 Celebration of Resistance at Starbucks Annual Meeting

NBC King 5 video here of the protest and interview with Bean 2 Cup Campaigner  Peter Van Schaick.

ABC KOMO-TV piece here: "Some Starbucks workers have aligned with the International [sic] Workers of the World to press for changes in Starbucks' policies. Schultz dismissed the efforts of 'fringe unions,'..."

Seattle Times piece here cites the protest and quotes a Starbucks investor in need of reading the 2006 Starbucks Corporate Irresponsibility Report: "Georgia McCollum, an investor from Gig Harbor, said when she heard there would be protests around the annual meeting this year — the Industrial Workers of the World helped lead a small rally for workers' rights outside McCaw Hall — "I couldn't think of one thing to protest."

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer previewed the Starbucks Annual Meeting including the presence of baristas and coffee farmer advocates calling for fair pay and respect from the coffee giant.

From the newspaper's homepage:

Organized labor, payment to Ethiopian coffee farmers and Starbucks' growth are issues likely to be raised when company shareholders gather today for the annual meeting.

And an AP piece has this:

"In addition to reassurance, investors attending the meeting willalso receive a rowdy welcome from the IWW Starbucks Workers Union and Justice from Bean To Cup, an affiliated activist organization. The union plans to have a giant inflatable cat crushing a giant rat [sic] outfitted in a Starbucks barista uniform, and also said barista and coffee farmer advocates will chant with picket signs outside the meeting."
