Sports Authority Recommends DISCLOSURE AND INDEPENDENT MONITORING to the Pittsburgh Pirates

April 19, 2007 Pittsburgh's David L Lawrence Convention Center - At a meeting of the Sports and Exhibition Authority today - Executive Director Mary Conturo and Board Chairman John Chalovich jointly announced the board's request that the Pittsburgh Pirates adopt the Workers Rights Consortium's monitoring protocols.  Sighting "difficulty gathering information" and following an exchange of letters between Chairman Chalovich and the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Board's request of the Pirates is a clear acknowledgment that Pittsburghers expect the Pirates to be responsible for the factories sewing Pirates apparel and that the Pirates have to catch the ball when our high standards for workers' rights are dropped by Major League Baseball.

Members of the Pittsburgh Anti Sweatshop Community Alliance commend the Sports and Exhibition Authority, particularly Jeff Koch of Pittsburgh City Council who consistently reminds the board of the City's 2006 All Star Anti Sweatshop Proclamation.

If you have a Major League Baseball team, it is likely that you have an SEA equivalent.  We are sure Pittsburgh's SEA would cooperate with other similar organizations having to respond to fan concerns about baseball's sweatshops.  Because these organizations hold the leases on baseball stadiums and manage the dept our communities have accumulated to build them, SEA members are acutely aware that fans have a right to expect accountability from their teams.
